- That statement, which drives everything we do, is the result of personal experience. We've watched loved ones give up all their favorite foods - especially their snacks. We've seen what that kind of depravation can do to the joy of eating. Then one day, we found a way to turn the tables, so to speak. And that's where these delicious, amazing, incredible oatmeal squares come in. Every one of our Oatmeal Squares contains Nature's SecretTM, proven to help lower cholesterol. This means every square has the power to change your day.
- How Do We Do It? With a little known, strange sounding, secret of nature called plant sterols. Plant sterols, also known as phytosterols, are plant-based compounds that occur naturally in fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole-grain products and most vegetable oils, but usually at levels too low to have an LDL cholesterol lowering impact. But adding plant sterols to foods at beneficial levels have been proven to help lower LDL "bad" cholesterol and may reduce the risk of heart disease.* Plant sterols are similar in form and function to cholesterol in animals and humans. Clinical studies indicate that, when consumed as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, plant sterols can interfere with the intestinal recycling of the cholesterol produced by the liver, effectively reducing the availability of cholesterol to the body. When plant sterols are consumed with meals, they can help reduce the absorption of both internal and dietary cholesterol in the small intestine by up to 50%. Over 140 clinical studies have shown that by including plant sterols into your diet at beneficial levels can help reduce LDL cholesterol levels by up to 15%.
- While there are more and more heart healthy foods available today, only those like all of Corazonas snacks, which have plant sterols (meeting specific FDA criteria) can display a statement on the package indicating they may help reduce the risk of heart disease*. How Much Plant Sterols Does it Take to Do the Job? Experts recommend that to get the maximum cholesterol-lowering benefits, you should consume between 1.5 to 3 grams of plant sterols per day. To begin to see any benefits you need to consume a minimum of 0.8 grams per day. Most Americans get approximately 0.25 grams of plant sterols per day from the foods they consume. While it may be difficult to get this amount naturally from heart healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, it is very achievable if you incorporate foods fortified with plant sterols into your daily diet. * FDA Health Claim: Foods containing at least 0.4g per serving of plant sterols, eaten twice a day with meals for a total daily intake of at least 0.8g, as a part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. A serving of Corazonas Oatmeal Squares supplies 0.8g of plant sterols per serving. See Nutrition facts panel for fat content.
