White Oak Bark was used extensively by the American Indians and early American settlers because of it's astringent qualities. Teas were taken internally and used as body washes. It is used in the treatment of hemorrhoids, PMS, varicose veins, goiter, gallstones, kidney stones, fever, sores, wounds, sore throat, canker sores, menstrual problems, gonorrhea, leucorrhea, stomach troubles and bladder problems. It is also beneficial to teeth. White Oak bark tea is used in enemas and douches, while additional benefits include the treatment of chronic diarrhea, dysentery, ringworm, chronic mucous discharge, poison-ivy rash, burns, pinworms, hemostatic, hemorrhages in the lungs, stomach, scrofula, and bowels, spitting of blood, vomiting, inflammations, boils, and sores. It has widely been considered a folk cancer remedy and since it contains tannin, experimentally, tannic acid is antiviral, antiseptic, anti-tumor and carcinogenic.
